Historical Importance of the Battle of Franklin
The Battle of Franklin, fought on November 30, 1864, in Tennessee, was a disastrous Confederate defeat and a pivotal Union victory during the Civil War. Gen. John Bell Hood’s Army of Tennessee launched a massive, 5-hour, frontal assault against Gen. John Schofield’s entrenched Union forces, resulting in ~10,000 total casualties.
The battle essentially destroyed the Confederate Army of Tennessee as an effective fighting force, marking one of the worst disasters for the Confederacy. It forced the abandonment of the Confederate offensive in the region and paved the way for the total collapse of their authority in Tennessee. Today, the site is recognized for its intense, close-quarters combat, particularly around the Carter House.
